About CHI

What is CHI?

CHI (Classroom in the Heart of Industry) is a training programme that provides a unique opportunity for young people, who are working below the academic level of Apprenticeships, to undertake on-the-job training. Whilst on the programme, students can work towards recognised qualifications to enhance their future prospects of employment.

The course provides a blend of intensive ‘classroom’ based learning and on the job training with the development of employability skills. The students work towards academic qualifications that have a focus on the workplace and independent living including Functional Skills, Preparation for Working Life and BTEC Hospitality.

The course is based over two sites at present, the Marsham Court Hotel and the Tesco Extra in Bournemouth, and students have the opportunity to experience working and learning over both sites.

The course has run since 2013 and has already confirmed its potential to really impact on the career and life chances of a group of young people who, with support and guidance, have the skills and aptitude to make a positive and lasting contribution to industry.

Who is CHI for?

The CHI programme is for learners who are aged 16-19 who are looking to develop the skills for employment.

To be eligible to apply for the course students should have an EHC plan or statement in place.

In addition to this applicants will also ideally have:

  • Already achieved some qualifications in literacy and numeracy (at least Entry Level 1)
  • Be independently travel trained
  • Have had a period of successful work experience
