Welcome to CHI
CHI (Classroom in the Heart of Industry) is an employment and education training programme for 16-19-year olds.
It is a unique opportunity to undertake on-the-job training whilst working towards recognised qualifications that will enhance future prospects.
The course acts as a gateway to employment by providing a blend of classroom based learning and practical supported real-life experiences in a range of workplace settings.
What is CHI?
CHI (Classroom in the Heart of Industry) is a three-year training programme that provides a unique opportunity for young people age 16- 19 with access to specialist provision to undertake real life on-the-job training. Whilst on the programme, students can work towards recognised qualifications to enhance their future prospects of employment.
The course provides a blend of class-based learning and on the job training with the development of employability skills. The students work towards academic qualifications that have a focus on the workplace as well as the development of independence, personal and social skills and personal wellbeing.
The course is based over different sites, three sites with work placements include Marsham Court Hotel, Tesco Extra Riverside and a new provision at Bargates Christchurch, Venture shop. We also have a base at Citygate in Bournemouth where second- and third-year students can access their academic studies.
The course has run since 2013 and has already confirmed its potential to really impact on the career and life chances of a group of young people who, with support and guidance, have the skills and aptitude to make a positive and lasting contribution to industry.
Who is CHI for?
The CHI programme is for learners aged 16-19 who are looking to develop the skills for gainful employment.
To be eligible to apply for the course students should have an EHCP and access to specialist provision.
Ideally, we would also ask that that the applicant:
- has already achieved some qualifications in literacy and numeracy (at least Entry Level 1)
- is independently travel trained (we will support students with travel training if this is not in place at the start of the programme)
- is keen to develop employability skills to gain paid employment and possibly previous successful work experience.
